Brooke turned 10 today - double digits. It should seem weird but for some reason I have been thinking she turned 10 like 6 months ago so now it just seems right. We just got back from the Grand Canyon late last night. Thankfully I did have her presents, but I had made no other arrangements and I was trying to help Robie get out of town to China, so needless to say it was a crazy day. Um, yeah, the giraffe cake is a little sad.. I've got another chance, though - she still wants another party with her friends, which we can't schedule until we get the soccer schedule, but I'm not sure what the statue of limitations is on birthday party planning? lucky for me, Brooke was very kind about its appearance and was thrilled that I let her light the candles.
I truly enjoy Brooke's company most of the time. On our recent road trip anytime I would yell out, "hey, girls look at _______ (pretty scenery, cool clouds, blah, blah)", I could hear her respond immediately, "wow, that's great." I'd say maybe 50% of the time she hadn't even looked up, but she pretty much knows what I want to hear :). Then when she could tell I was on to her, she'd start adding in details like, "wow, you're right - that cactus is really cool". She's always been kind of street smart and she's old enough now that instead of just seeming sassy or obnoxious she can reign it in and just have a pleasant conversation. For 4 truths and a lie that she had to do for school recently she chose these things:
my team won the volleyball championship in our league (true)
I've been sprayed by a skunk (not true)I've hand fed a giraffe (true)
I have a motorcycle (true - and the one that stumped the most people in her class)
She loves art and has been most annoyed this school year by another girl in her class that contends to be good at crafts. I mean, can you believe this girl had the nerve to say she likes crafts and she hasn't even made one box out of little scraps of paper or done any random drawings when they've had a break in class? i can hardly believe it myself :)
