AYUDAME

I think she has finally got it - reading has clicked for Ashley! A couple of days ago, I would make the sounds, D O G (saying each sound separately). What word do you think that is, Ash? Ashley - "cat?". Finally today she is sounding out easy words and it has clicked! We read the entirety of Go, Dog, Go (ok, I skipped a few pages towards the end, but come on, the book is like 80 pages), and then after a short break to brush her teeth she moved on to One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish - I'm so happy for her. I was really proud, but hopefully I didn't get her too excited. Her last thing she said before sleep was something about how if she moves to the blue reading group she can read chapter books. I tried to kindly inform her that probably wasn't going to happen TOMORROW, but you gotta have a goal, right?
Meanwhile, Lauren is also demonstrating her incredible intelligence with her new word for the day. The first usage was outside in the play house when she popped her head out the window and said, "Help me, ayudame, ayudame" over and over again. That's right, apparently there is an episode of Dora that has really rubbed off (for those who have not yet reached this bilingual plain, ayudame is "help me" in spanish). It was so cute then, but not as cute as i'm listening to her yelling at 10:30pm from her room the same thing... ayudame, ayudame! It is also sort of what I wanted to yell earlier when she was tormenting my visiting teachees' children that were trying to play with her toys. Ayudame!

Don't you love it when things finally "click" with reading?? I am SO with you on the skip a few pages--especially with the good Dr. Seuss, his books are endless when you are painfully sounding out each rhyming word. Way to go, Ashley (and Mom).

Your girls looked so cute in their Easter stuff!

I love, love the picture of Ashley! So funny that she's bilingual and you don't have a nanny!!

Ashley's face in that picture is priceless!! There is something very satisfying about your child learning to read. I have found it is kind of like when they learn to turn over, crawl or walk for the first time. For me it is like a big affirmation that somehow that little brain is in fact developing.

I just love Ashley, she is such a cutie. Congrats on the reading. I remember being so proud when I could read "One Fish, Two Fish". I actually read it to my class for Show & Tell.

There is nothing as satisfying! This is why I loved teaching first grade (in my west side Utah school, they didn't learn to read until first grade, we are SO much more advanced here in California!)
